Purpose turns the mundane into the meaningful.
Remember those 40,000 decisions? Truth be told, most of them aren't glamorous. Whether it's making lunch for your kids, cleaning up the laundry, punching a clock at a job you don't love, the reality is most of our moments feel more mundane. Purpose gives meaning to those moments. The big, the small, the simple, the complicated, the easy, the challenging—operating with a sense of purpose in this world means seeing the meaning in all of it.
I read a story once about President John F. Kennedy making a trip to NASA headquarters just as they were working to put the first man on the moon. During his visit, he noticed a janitor working hard to clean the halls. The President made his way over to this janitor and said, "Hi, I'm Jack Kennedy. What do you do for NASA?" Confidently, the janitor replied, "Well, Mr. President, I'm helping put a man on the moon."
This man showed up every single day at NASA to keep the place clean. To him, however, it was so much more than that. He saw his work as a part of a bigger story. He aligned his purpose and his work to that bigger story. And yes, he did help put a man on the moon because of it!
So, the question is this: How do we want to move through our lives? Do we want to move through life on autopilot, confused, anxious, and feeling mundane? Or mindfully aware, with clarity of thought, authentic, and connected to meaning?
Do we want to move through life with or without the strength of purpose at our feet?
